Swayambhunath – The Monkey Temple

Perched atop a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, Swayambhunath is one of Nepal’s most iconic and sacred sites. Also known as the Monkey Temple (for the playful monkeys that roam freely), it is a spiritual heart of Kathmandu and a symbol of harmony between Buddhism and Hinduism.

 A Spiritual Beacon

Swayambhunath is believed to be more than 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest religious sites in Nepal. The central white dome stupa with its all-seeing eyes of the Buddha represents wisdom and compassion, silently watching over the valley.

Surrounding the stupa are shrines, statues, and temples that reflect both Tibetan Buddhism and Nepali Hinduism, making it a unique place of interfaith reverence.

Why "Monkey Temple"?

The temple is affectionately known as the Monkey Temple due to the large troop of monkeys that inhabit the area. These monkeys are considered holy and are often seen playfully jumping around the stairs, trees, and rooftops.

Breathtaking Views

Climbing the 365 stone steps to reach the top rewards you with panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley—especially stunning at sunrise or sunset. Along the way, you'll pass prayer wheels, local vendors, and spiritual seekers.
